ah, I tried to make this once, but I completely failed... :P it really is quite beautiful, good job!! :D

do you have any tips for what kind of paper one should use for more complicated origami, such as this? ^^

You can find infos about the paper I used in the description of every photo in my gallery. I use mostly wrapping paper for gifts ("kraft" type). However, this particular unicorn model is so well-designed it can be folded from any kind of paper, really, even printer paper ([link])
